The Little Red Schoolhouse offers a theme-based curriculum that emphasizes four areas of development:
1. Social: Our social objective is to build a community of learners through cooperative activities and games. We offer a safe environment in which each child acquires the skills that come from working in a group, while also developing the confidence and freedom to share with that group the perspectives that make him or her unique.
2. Emotional: The daily rhythm of activities at Little Red is carefully designed to encourage children’s independence as well as group awareness. Teachers provide a supportive setting and customized plan to foster each child’s self-confidence, empathy, and ability to share with others.
3. Physical: Little Red’s spacious facility allows children to develop large motor coordination through active play, both indoors and out. Through carefully prepared “free choice” activities, children encounter a wide range of small-motor exercises each day. The Little Red curriculum helps reinforce these skills through learning based play (e.g., map-making, toy ship-building, and designing animal habitats with paint and clay).
4. Academic: Little Red’s rotating, two-year curriculum prepares children for kindergarten with an emphasis on skills related to social awareness, reading readiness, math, and experimental science activities. Stories, songs, drama, and conversation encourage a cooperative learning environment. Our experienced teachers use differentiated instruction to “meet each child where he/she is” and to guide and stimulate each child’s natural inquisitiveness.
