The National Cancer Institute and the National Heart Institute, Lung, and Blood and the Office of Research in social and behavioral sciences at the National Institutes of Health have joined forces to provide the funds to continue the program CPHHD. This program responds to a strategic priority of the NIH to address the disparities and inequalities in the prevalence and consequences of diseases, including heart disease. The program requires CPHHD transdisciplinary research involving social research, behavioral, biological and genetic knowledge to improve on the causes of health disparities and to develop effective methods of prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases and health promotion.
